CRIMINAL AND CIVIL INFRACTION DEFENSE

Picture
Contact us today if you have been charged, ticketed, or believe you may have a criminal, traffic, or civil infraction issue.  Our services cover misdemeanors and civil infractions in any district court in Ingham County.  At Student Legal Services we are highly aware of the negative consequences a criminal conviction can have as it relates to future career and educational pursuits.  One of our primary goals is to eliminate (or at least reduce) charges to assure students do not end up with a criminal record.  We educate students on the options they have so they can make informed decisions as to resolving their matter. Criminal, traffic, and civil infractions must be acted upon promptly and students should Schedule an Appointment with Student Legal Services immediately upon receiving notice of a charge.

Please see our arraignment checklist to assist you with your arraignment at 54B District Court.

Below are some of the issues that our office commonly assists students with:
  • Minor in Possession (MIP) - Although the violation for a first offense MIP is now a civil infraction (secondary offenses are still misdemeanors), serious consequences remain regarding your driver’s license due to the notification to the Secretary of State.
  • Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) - OWI is a misdemeanor driving offense that carries many serious and expensive ramifications.  An OWI is issued when a person is operating a motor vehicle under the influence of an intoxicating or controlled substance or operating a motor vehicle with a Blood Alcohol Content of .08 or above.
  • Driving While License Suspended (DWLS) - DWLS is a misdemeanor driving offense that occurs when a person is operating a motor vehicle with a license that has been suspended for any reason.  Commonly the suspension results from failure to take care of a ticket from a prior traffic offense, acquiring too many points, or as a result of another traffic offense that requires a suspension.
  • Disorderly Conduct - Disorderly conduct is a misdemeanor offense that encompasses many different prohibited acts.  Common disorderly conduct offenses include: drunk and disorderly, urinating in public, obstruct/resist/hinder/oppose a police officer, fighting, false ID to a police, false ID to obtain alcohol, and many more.
  • Assault - Assault is an offense that stems from unlawful contact with another person and can be charged in varying degrees depending on the type of conduct or persons involved and the severity of injury to the victim.
  • Noise Violation - A noise violation can be charged as a misdemeanor or a civil infraction, depending on the circumstances.
  • Traffic Violations - While some traffic violations are misdemeanors, many are civil infractions. All traffic violations may have ramifications on your driving record, as well as your insurance rates.
  • Civil Infractions - Civil infractions are civil wrongs that do not rise to the level of a misdemeanor. While a civil infraction is not a misdemeanor, students still must respond to the tickets promptly.  Common civil infractions are parking tickets, littering/party litter, refuse container violations, smoking on campus, and many more.
