SERVICES
Student Legal Services provides legal advice and consultation in a wide variety of legal areas, such as criminal defense, arrest record destruction, traffic, landlord/tenant, consumer protection, contracts, small claims, insurance, power of attorney for health care and finance, and much more. In-court representation is also available and subject to the jurisdiction of the district court in Michigan. Covered services include most traffic violations, civil disputes up to $25,000, landlord/tenant disputes, and misdemeanor criminal cases that are punishable by not more than one year in jail. In-court representation is limited to Ingham County district courts only. Remember, all eligible students receive these services free of charge.
Student Legal Services does not provide advice or representation on issues regarding taxes, bankruptcy, business, patent/trademark/copyright, divorce, real estate, or legal claims against ASMSU, COGS, and Michigan State University. In the event we cannot help you with your legal situation, we may be able to refer you to someone who can. In addition to our consultation and representation services, Student Legal Services also provides an array of informational brochures and sample legal documents and is available, upon request, to give presentations to student and campus organizations, such as Registered Student Organizations, fraternities, and sororities. Many of our speaking engagements and preventative law programs focus on individual constitutional rights, how to deal with the police, landlord/tenant issues, and other similar topics. If you would like Student Legal Services to present to your group, please contact us, and we will be happy to schedule a time. Student Legal Services is also available for resource fairs and tabling events where we help to raise awareness about Student Legal Services and assist in educating students about a particular issue or topic. |
